Magnificent work by Paul Nicolas (1875-1952), made for St. Louis. The coupe is truly beautiful, the colour varies as the lighting changes, sometimes it has an almost milky orange colour, at other times it shows warm yellow and black tints. The red rim at the neck creates are beautiful contrast. Paul Nicolas first worked for Emile Gallé for many years (1893-1919), among others as as head designer. in 1919, he started his own business by creating work under his own name and D’Argental and for Saint Louis for whom he made special glass art designs. He did this up until the 2nd World War. The book: ‘Paul Nicolas, Itinéraire d’un verrier Lorrain’ discusses a lot of his work for St. Louis. The example of the signature at the bottom of the coupe, can be seen on page 35, image 4. The work of Paul Nicolas can be admired in many museums, the Musée de l’Ecole de Nancy has a very extensive collection of his work.
