This 1862 Ames Model 1840 artillery saber is a regulation Union sidearm carried by Federal light artillery troops during the American Civil War. Ames of Chicopee, Massachusetts, produced the majority of these curved, single-edged sabers for the U.S. Ordnance Department; the present example bears the firm’s mark, the 1862 date, and the inspection stamp of Andrew D. King.
Its 32-inch blade and brass-hilted grip represent the standard equipment of Union artillerymen who helped preserve the United States and, through the war’s outcome, made possible the permanent abolition of slavery by the Thirteenth Amendment. It was used by Federal forces in a conflict that cost hundreds of thousands of lives changing the course of American history and ultimately ending legal slavery in the United States.
