Description

Emile A. Gruppe (American, 1896-1978) “Unloading The Nets”

A Gloucester sunny day after the catch when the fishermen are unloading the nets from a day of fishing. A large Gruppe at 30×36 with fishing and sail boats in the water with the city of Gloucester in the background. It has everything you want and nothing you dont. I learned 40 years ago to only collect the best subject matter from the best artists. This painting checks all the boxes!

Emile Albert Gruppe was an American painter celebrated for his lively impressionistic landscapes and coastal scenes, particularly those of Massachusetts and Florida. Born in Rochester, New York, he spent his early years in the Netherlands, where his father, Charles P. Gruppe, was associated with the Hague School and worked as a dealer for Dutch artists in the United States. After establishing his permanent studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts, Gruppe became a prominent member of the Cape Ann school, capturing the region’s bustling harbors and atmospheric New England light with a style influenced by French Impressionist Claude Monet.
A notable chapter of his career unfolded during extended winter stays along Florida’s Gulf Coast – especially in Sarasota and Naples – from the late 1940s through the 1970s, where he painted vibrant coastal views distinguished by tropical foliage, shimmering waters, and the state’s luminous sunlight. Though best known for his varied landscapes and marine subjects, Gruppe also produced expressive portraits and figure studies throughout his prolific career.
