Description

Emile Albert Gruppe (American, 1896-1978) oil on canvas painting, circa 1930s impressionist to Mid-Century Modern style.

For your consideration: an early and rare masterpiece Emile Albert Gruppe painting representing a sailboat in rough seas. Gruppe turned out a large amount of paintings in the 1940s and 1950s but very few in the 1930s when this painting was executed. His signature style is evident in the brush strokes but a keen eye can see an intent to create his style in this work. This piece draws eyes to it like none other and Gruppe paintings are a great investment today. This is the only Gruppe with a small boat in rough seas that I am aware of making this a rare, detailed and very moving piece.

Emile A. Gruppe was a painter-teacher who was born in 1896, the son of renowned painter Charles P. Gruppe (1860-1940). He lived throughout his professional painting career in Gloucester, MA and wintered in Jeffersonille, VT and Sarasota, FL. Gruppe studied at the National Academy (NYC), at the Grande Chaumiere, Paris; and with John F. Carlson, Richard Miller, George Bridgman, Charles Chapman and Charles Hawthorne (in Provincetown) and by 1930 he was known for his fluid, lucid post-impressionist scenes of the American landscape and of Gloucester boating views.
