GRUPPE Emile Albert, (American, 1896-1978) Title: “Gray Day, Gloucester” Oil on Canvas Painting: 20′ x 24 Inches Signed lower right: Emile A Gruppe Framed: 24.5 x 28.75 Inches (Newer and not original) Condition: Excellent. No issues. Another harbor scene with men busy working to prepare and mend the nets, ready their boats and fish the Massachusetts waters near Gloucester. The sky’s are pink and gray. I particularly like Gruppe’s paintings with men working with their broad shoulders and work clothes. The colors on this painting are vibrant Gruppe’s signature style here is magnificent. Emile Albert Gruppé was born 1896 in Rochester, New York. He lived the early years of his life in the Netherlands as his father, Charles P. Gruppé, painted with the Hague School of art and acted as a dealer for the Dutch painters in the United States. The family returned permanently to the States around 1913 when rumblings of World War I were brewing. All of Emile’s siblings established themselves in the arts, Paulo Mesdag (1891–1979) as a cellist, Karl Heinrich (1893–1982) as a sculptor, and Virginia Helena Gruppé as a watercolorist. Gruppé studied at the National Academy in New York City and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris.[when?][citation needed] His artistic career began in 1915 but was briefly interrupted in 1917, when he spent a year in the United States Navy.
