Description

Emile Gruppe (American, 1896-1978)

A monumentally large post Impressionist painting from the 1930s by Emile Gruppe. Emile and his father Charles were very fond of sailboats and on rare occasions took on the big ships with their pallets. This painting was probably commissioned as it was rare for Emile to paint a frigate schooner of this size. An early painting; he falls back to his classical style of painting and turns out this spectacular marine painting with his mastery of pastel colors in grand fashion.

Absolutely original condition! Unlined with no inpaint. No cracking and very stabile paint. Some lifting lines throughout. Very fresh with possibly later semi gloss varnish. Photos show tiny white dots which are sparkles from the sun shining the day I photographed the painting. Ready to hang.

Canvas: 32 inches x 30 inches

Framed: 39 inches x 37 inches (newer frame with wear)

Emile A. Gruppe was a painter-teacher who was born in 1896, the son of renowned painter Charles P. Gruppe (1860-1940). Gruppe studied at the National Academy (NYC), at the Grande Chaumiere, Paris; and with John F. Carlson, Richard Miller, George Bridgman, Charles Chapman and Charles Hawthorne (in Provincetown) and by 1930 he was known for his fluid, Lucid post-impressionist scenes of the American landscape and of Gloucester boating views.
