Description
Han Dynasty Rare Mythical Steed Pottery Horse
A Chinese Pottery Horse, Dan Dynasty
Sichuan Han tomb guardian or shaman figure
Dimensions: 10.5 x 9.5 x 3.5 inches (27 x 25 x 9 cm)
The kind associated with the Queen Mother of the West, or a dragon-horse. Those often have exaggerated features meant to signal supernatural power rather than a real animal. The muscular rolls fit that too. Could also be a heavenly horse from the Ferghana region, which Han artisans idealized with those same dramatic expressions.
Condition: Very Good with wear indicative of age. Incrusted. Some fine stable heat cracks underside annd anround a rear haunch. Incrustations are mineral deposits that built up on the surface over centuries of burial. They’re usually calcium carbonate or silica from groundwater seeping through the soil, sometimes mixed with iron oxides that give that orange color. They form a crusty, uneven layer that can look almost like a second skin on the pottery.
