Description
Henri-Joseph Harpignies (French, 1819)
Paysage D’ Ete de la Saint-Martin
Oil on canvas
Portraying a landscape scene in summer outside of Paris on a subsidiary of the Seine River on the Saint Martin River. This is a Barbizon plain air painting showing the shades of light on a summer day deep in the woods and under the trees. The tops of the trees showing brighter lights gradually decreasing into the bushes under the canopies. The impressionist brushstrokes are undeniable with mastery of diction telling a full story of depth that takes you into the beautiful blue skies and beyond. This is a large and heavy painting and will command attention in any great space.
