Description

John Haynes Williams (British, 1836-1908) fine antique oil painting on canvas of two opposing realities.
“Two worlds.”
Signed “Haynes Williams” lower left.
Dated “1867.”

This is a fine original antique work of art by British artist John Haynes Williams. A bright and cheery scene capturing a secular wealthy Spanish couple walking down a sunny colonial road while passing a religious scene of a beggar and commoner couple praying for better fortunes. Vivid detail and color bring a surreal quality to the subject, typical of the skill Williams had for telling a story with his brush. Known as the novelist of the canvas, his works have a magnetic quality that draws in the onlooker and leaves one wondering about the scenario that inspired the particular scene. A very active artist in England, John Haynes Williams painted a large number of similarly intricate scenes of human joy and interaction. Studying in Worcester and Birmingham, he exhibited at the Royal academy in 1863-1897.

This is an outstanding painting for collectors of British art work. Remaining in wonderful original condition, it brings life and cheer to any room it becomes a part of, likewise being a natural conversation piece.
