Alfred and Doris Aitken were drawn to George Nakashima’s work well before woodworking artist became a household name. Having purchased a set of four straight back chairs from the Nakashima studio in 1955, the couple continued to commission work from the master craftsman over the next three decades. Each Nakashima piece in the Aitken estate remains in excellent condition, and, even more remarkably, many examples retain original paperwork relating to their design and purchase. Ultimately, the Aitken estate includes not only a wonderful group of furniture produced by an iconic American artist but also an interesting archive relating to the artist’s studio and its business operations over a span of thirty years.
